A lively account of the interaction between European and indigenous artist that took place during more than 300 years of Spanish and Portuguese colonial influence in Latin America (c. 1492-1820). The book offers a fascinating insight into viceregal, missionary and civic architecture, as well as painting, sculpture and such 'minor arts' as furniture, textiles and ceramics. This is a long-awaited book on an increasingly popular subject and includes many previously unillustrated works. For over three hundred years, from the era of Christopher Columbus to the struggles for independence around 1820, Latin America witnessed an artistic flowering of enormous creativity and originality. In a unique way, the art and architecture of Aztec, Inca and Guarani civilizations blended with those of Europe, North Africa and the Far East. In particular, the Spanish and Portuguese empires in Central and South America created the climate for a flourishing, diverse and distinct version of Renaissance and Baroque culture, produced under utterly different social and geographic conditions from those found in Europe. The products of this unique culture include some of the most lavish and visually arresting works of art and architecture in the world. In this lively overview of the tremendously rich and varied artistic output of the area from southern Chile to northern California, Gauvin Alexander Bailey discusses viceregal and missionary as well as civic and rural architecture, alongside religious and secular painting, sculpture, metalwork, textiles and ceramics. But he also looks back to pre-colonial influences and concludes with an examination of how twentieth-century artists such as Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo interpreted their artistic heritage. Even today, the art of the colonial period remains at the centre of Latin American society, culture and identity. The result is a book that provides a new and comprehensive understanding of all the influences that led to one of the most cosmopolitan artistic outpourings in the whole history of art.

New!: $98.00 $61.74 (as of 01/16/2013 22:12 PST)

Appreciation

Among contemporary architectural theorists and practitioners Rob Krier is one of the most controversial and respected. Born in Luxembourg in 1938 he is known worldwide for his masterful architectural accomplishments through projects such as De Resident in The Hague (1993–2001), or the Cité Judiciaire in Luxembourg (1992–2008). Besides his actual profession Krier has for years also made a vocation of his love of art.

In his contribution to the European Embankment project in St. Petersburg, Krier recently demonstrated the power of architecture and fine art to cross-fertilise. He designed the façade for a 132-metres long building on the Newa riverbank – one that looks across the water onto the rear façade of the Hermitage for which he modelled more than 50 figures in white clay, as well as around 65 linear metres of reliefs.

Bernini: Art as Theatre forges a new analysis of Baroque illusionism through a study of this artist’s sculptural ensembles. Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598–1680) was a sculptor, architect, and painter, but also a court scenographer, playwright, actor, and director. Bernini’s work in theater served as a wellspring for his art’s visual effects. Theater was the dominant cultural paradigm of the Baroque, manifest in the rise of opera and ballet, as well as increasingly magnificent scenographic technologies for the performed rituals of church and court. Bernini drew on a lexicon of theatrical effects, deploying light, movement, and a fusion of fictive and physical space to render new forms of artistic illusion in both his sculptural mise-en-scènes and his stage sets. The force of his art’s illusionistic powers lay in a fiction of materials effected through medial exchanges between sculpture, painting, and architecture. This book opens up provocative new frameworks for the analysis of Baroque illusionism extending beyond Bernini to a reconsideration of 17th-century visual culture as a whole.

"They're Not Pets, Susan," says a stern father who has just shot a bumblebee, its wings sparkling in the evening sunlight. A lone office worker, less than an inch high, looks out over the river in his lunch break, "Dreaming of Packing it All In." A tiny man makes his way back to a tiny car, with a tiny shopping bag: "Shopping for one again." Another office worker sits atop a gigantic engagement ring and gazes into the distance; the caption reads, simply: "No." These are the collected photographs of Slinkachu, a London-based artist who for several years has been placing tiny hand painted people on street corners, park benches, and the Underground, and leaving them to fend for themselves. Much like Banksy's early graffiti work, Slinkachu's creations mix the bustle, humor, and melancholy of city life, and lie quietly in the darker corners of London's streets, waiting to be discovered. And if you’re lucky enough to find one, to quote The Times: "Oddly enough, even when you know they are just hand-painted figurines, you can't help but feel that their plights convey something of our own fears about being lost and vulnerable in a big, bad city." This volume also includes a forward from acclaimed novelist Will Self.

New!: $29.95 $19.57 (as of 01/13/2013 11:51 PST)

Appreciation

In 1971, Harald Szeemann invited the American sculptor and installation pioneer Paul Thek to contribute to Documenta 5. Szeemann had named one section of the Documenta "Individual Mythologies," describing a new kind of art structured around a mythology invented by individual artists, rather than by a culture. Thek's contribution--the now legendary "Pyramid" installation--came to be seen as the supreme example of Individual Mythology, and is one of Thek's best known works (Documenta 5 is likewise among the most famous of all Documentas to date). Paul Thek in Process stems from an unrealized publication that Thek had hoped to produce for Documenta 5, which would enlarge upon the occasion and the mythology of his "Pyramid." It comprises a trove of previously unpublished photographs recording the installation at Moderna Museet in 1971-72, all of the surviving correspondence between Thek and the museum, work-related ephemera and press coverage of the work.

Rebecca Warren

New!: $60.00 $37.80 (as of 01/13/2013 01:33 PST)

Appreciation

Rebecca Warren's first monograph is chronological review of her career to date. Showing both key works and installation shots, (including the Turner Prize, Serpentine Gallery, the 54th Venice Biennale and numerous interntional solo exhibitions) her work is further contextualised with an essay by Bice Curiger, editor of Parkett. Warren's sculptures in clay, bronze and steel, ebb from figuration to abstraction, ranging from the amorphous to more clearly recognizable forms. Always evident in Warren's work is the negotiation between thought and process. Ideas and influences are filtered, distorted and often discarded as they find three-dimensional form. Her sculptures can be tender and droll, yet also aggressive in their depiction of the female form. Yet while she often manages to both invoke and skewer the work of familiar male artists such as Willem de Kooning, Alberto Giacometti and cartoonist R. Crumb, individually and collectively Warren's works form an entirely modern, complex and distinctive visual language. "She is no pasticher of the past," wrote Jonathan Jones in The Guardian, "but an original and formidable talent."

Found Sculpture and Photography from Surrealism to Contemporary Art (Ashgate Studies in Surrealism)
by Anna Dezeuze, Julia Kelly

New!: $99.95 (as of 01/10/2013 23:56 PST)

Appreciation

Taking its departure point from the 1933 surrealist photographs of 'involuntary sculptures' by Brassai and Dali, Found Sculpture and Photography from Surrealism to Contemporary Art offers fresh perspectives on the sculptural object by relating it to both surrealist concerns with chance and the crucial role of photography in framing the everyday. This collection of essays questions the nature of sculptural practice, looking to forms of production and reproduction that blur the boundaries between things that are made and things that are found. One of the book's central themes is the interplay of presence and absence in sculpture, as it is highlighted, disrupted, or multiplied through photography's indexical nature. The essays examine the surrealist three-dimensional object, its relation to and transformation through photographs, as well as the enduring legacies of such concerns for the artwork's materiality and temporality in performance and conceptual practices from the 1960s through the present. Found Sculpture and Photography sheds new light on the shifts in status of the art object, challenging the specificity of visual practices, pursuing a radical interrogation of agency in modern and contemporary practices, and exploring the boundaries between art and everyday life.

The definitive monograph of Annette Messager, covering her multifaceted oeuvre from immersive installations to intricate taxidermy, now updated and expanded in collaboration with the artist. Annette Messager’s original use of form and poetic power of communication place her among Europe’s leading contemporary artists. Her work experiments with a wide variety of media, from painting and sculpture to assemblage, photography, film, and embroidery. From her early works exploring fictional autobiography to her commanding, "penetrable" installations, her work is at once intimate and universal, using familiar objects to challenge conventional outlooks.A strong, visual work that provides a clear picture of the artist’s creative development, this edition encompasses her recent work, including the installation Casino at the 2005 Venice Biennale. Including a thirty-four page introductory portfolio, the book is organized thematically and incorporates first hand interviews with the artist and analyses of individual works. Completed by a full exhibition history and extensive bibliography, this is a must-read for anyone interested in current artistic developments in Europe.

Appreciation

"Since the 1960s, sculptors have used materials such as latex, felt, fabric, and even hair. Regarded as low-value and perishable, such ingredients refer the beholder to his own body and bring a profound psychological component into play-rather than merely irritating his gaze, they touch him quite immediately on the physical level.

Birgit Dieker (b. Gescher, 1969; lives in Berlin) works in this tradition. Her sculptures attest to a relentless engagement with the human body, which she dissects into its individual elements and defamiliarizes. Working with staples such as corsetry, discarded clothes, hair, and leather, she composes fragmented bodies or organs. Layer by layer, she compacts her materials to create figures and objects before making deliberate cuts that bring their innermost core to the surface. The aesthetically perfect surface thus reveals emotional injuriees and psychological abysses from which we cannot avert our eyes. The catalogue features an essay by Andrea Jahn that sheds light on these subtly interwoven issues from the perspective of the art historian; Clemens Meyer's literary portrait ""Anita,"" meanwhile, promises an intoxicating reading experience."

Appreciation

For thirty years, Modeling the Figure in Clay has been an indispensable anatomical resource for people who think, see, and understand form best in the round: sculptors. In the thirtieth anniversary edition of this classic work, master sculptor Bruno Lucchesi invites you on a guided tour of the human form. Follow him as he creates a figure in clay—literally from the inside out—starting with the skeleton, laying on the muscles to show male and female anatomy, and finishing with a complete figure sculpture with every detail of face and hair carefully modeled.

BRUNO LUCCHESI’s work has been added to the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Dallas Museum, among many others. Lucchesi has received awards from the National Academy, the National Arts Club, and the Architectural League. He was a Guggenheim Fellow in 1962-1963, he won a Gold Medal award from the National Academy of Design in 1990, and was awarded the Polich Tallix Foundry Prize from the National Sculpture Society in 2009.

Appreciation

Art in Theory (1648-1815) provides a wide-ranging and comprehensive collection of documents on the theory of art from the founding of the French Academy until the end of the Napoleonic Wars. Like its highly successful companion volumes, Art in Theory (1815-1900) and Art in Theory (1900-1990), its' primary aim is to provide students and teachers with the documentary material for informed and up-to-date study. Its' 240 texts, clear principles of organization and considerable editorial content offer a vivid and indispensable introduction to the art of the early modern period.

Harrison, Wood and Gaiger have collected writing by artists, critics, philosophers, literary figures and administrators of the arts, some reprinted in their entirety, others excerpted from longer works. A wealth of material from French, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch and Latin sources is also provided, including many new translations.

Among the major themes treated are early arguments over the relative merits of ancient and modern art, debates between the advocates of form and color, the beginnings of modern art criticism in reviews of the Salon, art and politics during the French Revolution, the rise of landscape painting, and the artistic theories of Romanticism and Neo-classicism.

Each section is prefaced by an essay that situates the ideas of the period in their historical context, while relating theoretical concerns and debates to developments in the practice of art. Each individual text is also accompanied by a short introduction. An extensive bibliography and full index are provided.
